THERE’S A PARTY GOING ON …AT THE “MAVERICKS” CONCERT!!

Jimmy Buffet, Zac Brown, Bruce Springsteen and the Mavericks… what do they share? These bands create a party atmosphere at their shows where the concert goer just can’t sit still in their seats! The audience embraces each song with contagious energy.  These performances are just plain FUN!!

Recently I had the good fortune to take in an Evening with the Mavericks (www.themavericksband.com) at the Charleston Music Hall and from the start you could tell that there was a party going on! People were dancing in the aisles and in their seats from the first few beats the band laid down. Now, I see my share of live music and expect folks to stand during a performance. But these people were swinging in the aisles with many couples dancing together! This 8 piece outfit was making their second visit to the Music Hall in as many years as they played to nearly a sellout crowd!  Who are these Mavericks that you speak of?

The band formed in 1989 in So. Florida, led by the smooth baritone of Raul Malo. Their sound combines many influences including contemporary country, Latin rhythms and early rock standards. You need to check out their YouTube videos. Their music is culturally as well as musically diverse. In 1994, they released their bestselling album,”What a Crying Shame”, producing 5 hits. Listen to this album and you will recognize the music as having been on your radio back in the 90’s. I own this CD, which was my introduction to the Mavericks. The band is on tour in support of their latest record, “MONO”.

The lineup that performed in Charleston this month consisted of two horn players, bass, and an  accordion player supporting the core band of  Raul Malo on lead Vocals and  Guitar, Paul Deakin on  Drums, Eddie Perez on Lead Guitar and Jerry Dale McFadden on Piano and Organ. From the time they took the stage, the audience was into it! Their song selection reflected Malo’s Latin roots along with California country influences and Rock and Roll classics. They remind me at times of Dwight Yoakum as well as pioneering rock bands from the late 50’s and early 60’s. They performed a beautiful cover of Roy Orbison’s, “Blue Bayou” along with their original music. With no opening act, they played for 90 minutes before returning for a 6 song encore. They opened up the final segment with a great rendition of Pink Floyd’s “Us and Them”(Dark Side) and followed that up with Neil Young’s, “Harvest Moon”. Both were surprises and they were well received. They finished up with 4 of their songs, leaving the audience satiated.

I recognize that many may want to nominate their band to be included with the esteemed lineup I highlighted at the beginning of the blog. My list is by no means exclusive of great party bands. But recognize that there is a difference from between great performances and great parties. Both have their place in our concert history. When you want to just have fun tonight, may I recommend   an Evening with the Mavericks. Easy on the ears and the wallet!
