Live for Live Music in the Lowcountry

580I came to town 27 years ago and the music scene was sparse to say the least. Very few name bands chose to make Charleston a stop on their tour…the town was too small to draw a big enough audience to make it worth the band’s while. My, how times have changed. To get the facts about what Charleston has to offer, read on.

When worlds collide…John Mayer embraces the Grateful Dead

While I am a proud Deadhead, this blog will not be a shrine to their music. But this  first  entry is all about why  Dead and Company might be the best band performing live this year. Continue reading

How did we get here?

For me it all started at Madison Square Garden in NYC, 1971. My first concert was “Alvin Lee and Ten Years after” in one of America’s great arenas. I took the bait hook, line and sinker and have been going to concerts for the last 45 years. More than 300 shows later, I am hopelessly addicted to live music. Not a bad addiction to have.

Many times I have caught the magic during performances from those I expect but even more often from many  I never knew existed. This magic makes us remember songs and moments that would otherwise have been lost in gray matter and gray hair. I remember the performances of David Bowie, the Who and the Rolling Stones at MSG in the mid-seventies. My favorite Jerry Garcia band show was at Bailey Hall,Cornell University(NY) in 1975. Nicky Hopkins’ piano was amazing and lent a perfect foil to Jerry Garcia’s guitar licks.I remember the first time I saw Bruce Springsteen,Jackson Browne, the Eagles and Lynard Skynard as opening acts! It taught me early on to always be there before the show begins!

My hope is that this blog,”Do you believe in magic?”, will provide those of us addicted to live music a place to share our experiences for the benefit of each other.I encourage any one who visits this site and wants to contribute, contact me and we’ll figure out how to do that! With the plethora of bands and musicians touring these days, it’s a special feeling when you discover a great new band and want to share the good news with others. It gives our friends around the country a chance to make everyone aware of music worth listening to.

Thanks for checking out my blog. I hope you return to read the latest postings. When you do, I would appreciate your feedback. And if you catch the magic at a show, whether it’s one song or an entire performance, enjoy that experience and share it with all of us! “The music never stopped…” July, 2016
